Bryggen / Bergen Norway

We spent most of our time in the Bryggen district. The German area of Hanseatic merchants who fished here and sold the oil and dried fish in Germany.

When you get off the ship the first big thing you see is the Bergen Fortress that once protected this city. It is used by the government now, but you can walk around the grounds.

Between the building are allies with what one brochure calls, higgledy-piggledy small wooden houses, cobbled streets with stone steps in the steepest parts and flowers in every window. Like a fairy-tale. (It really is too.)

There are lots of these alleys where house are built one after the other up the hill, higgledy-piggledy style.  :)

We took a tour of a Hanseatic house. The beds were in closets that closed up completely to keep you warm in the winter. They painted pretty designs on the walls. This house was built in the 1600's but the area was built in the middle ages, around the 15th century.

Around the corner from the Fortress we found a thrift shop. Kira waited while we shopped around.

We even found a little thrift shop to go in.
More examples of the buildings built by merchants.
This is an old house that is now an embroidered lace shop.
